About Happy Academy & Assessment Center
A Beacon of Hope for Children with Special Needs in Zenu, Tema
"No Child Left Behind — Regardless of Ability or Background"
OUR FOUNDING STORY
How It All Began
Happy Academy and Assessment Center started as a dream long before it became a school. Madam Happy Emmanuella Akunlibey, our founder, had wanted to help vulnerable children since her own childhood. Her earliest vision was to build an orphanage. But God had a different plan — one that would grow into something even more needed.
In July, August, and September 2021, Happy Academy opened its doors as a pilot school for children with and without disabilities — an inclusive education experiment in the heart of Zenu, Zone 2 Lane 5B. The school began modestly as an educational center where local residents enrolled their children for foundational learning.
But Madam Happy did not wait for people to come to her. In those early days, she moved from one home to another, sensitizing and educating community members about the importance of early childhood education and the services the school offered. She knocked on doors. She answered questions. She planted seeds of understanding.
The location: Zenu, Zone 2 Lane 5B, Tema
The year: 2021
The mission: No child left behind.
THE FIRST STUDENT
Master Daniel — The Boy Who Changed Everything
Over time, as part of our community outreach, a child in Tema showing signs of developmental and learning disabilities was identified. His name was Master Daniel. He was the son of a male nurse — a single parent who expressed deep frustration about caring for his son while attending to work.
Daniel was assessed by our team. He was enrolled as the first student with a disability in our boarding house. That day — October 12, 2021 — marked the true beginning of our inclusive education journey.
First admission date: October 12, 2021
First student: Master Daniel (autism spectrum disorder)
First boarding student: Same child — a boy whose father refused to give up on him
THE TRANSITION
From Inclusive School to Special School
As we continued assessments, more children with disabilities were identified. Families heard about us. They came carrying children who had been rejected everywhere else.
Unfortunately, due to limited public understanding of inclusive education, some parents of non-disabled children began withdrawing their wards. They did not understand why children with disabilities were in the same classrooms. They were afraid. Misinformed. We do not blame them. We blame the lack of education in our communities about disability.
The initial children were catered for by the Proprietor, Madam Happy Emmanuella Akunlibey (also known as Mrs. Adongo Happy Emmanuella) and her husband, Awuni Adongo, with some support from a few generous parents.
Despite these challenges, our commitment remained firm. We made a promise: no child would be left behind, regardless of their abilities or background.
The school fully transitioned into a Special School — dedicated exclusively to serving children with diverse disabilities.
WHO WE SERVE TODAY
Our Children, Our Family
Today, Happy Academy serves children with:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
At Happy Academy, we don’t just manage autism. We celebrate the unique gifts of every child on the spectrum.
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy — Movement, Mobility, and Dignity.
A child with Cerebral Palsy has a body that won’t cooperate — but a mind and spirit ready to soar.
Children with Down Syndrome learn differently, love deeply, and achieve greatly. We give them the chance. Learn more to see various ways we help children with down syndrome lives a better life
Intellectual Disability (ID) is characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior — the everyday social and practical skills needed to live independently.
Learning Disabilities (LD) are neurologically-based processing disorders that interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing, or math.
Abandoned and Street Children
Abandoned & Street Children — No Child Should Grow Up Alone. They didn’t choose the streets. They didn’t choose to be abandoned.
Many of our students come from financially disadvantaged homes. Some are street children. Some were abandoned at our gate. Some were brought by grandparents who can barely feed themselves.
We accept them all.
OUR MISSION
Why We Exist
Happy Academy and Assessment Center is a non-profit organization committed to providing a comprehensive, inclusive, and supportive educational environment tailored to meet the unique developmental, academic, and emotional needs of children with disabilities.
We believe that every child deserves access to education, therapy, and love — regardless of their condition.
OUR VISION
The Future We Are Building
We envision a Ghana where no child with a disability is hidden, abandoned, or denied an education. A future where special needs education is available and affordable for every family. A community where disability is understood, accommodated, and celebrated as part of human diversity.
We will not stop until every child in Tema who needs us has a place to sleep, food to eat, and a school to attend.
OUR CORE VALUES
The Principles That Guide Us
❤️ Love First
Before therapy, before education, before anything else — we love our children. Love is the foundation of every intervention.
🤝 No Child Turned Away
We have never rejected a child for inability to pay. We will not start now.
🌱 Dignity in All Things
Every child deserves to be clean, fed, clothed, and respected. We provide diapers, baths, meals, and kind words.
Never Give Up
Before therapy, before education, before anything else — we love our children. Love is the foundation of every intervention.
Community Over Isolation
We do not hide children with disabilities. We bring them into community. We sensitize. We educate. We include.
Faith and Perseverance
Our founder's faith has carried this school through impossible circumstances. We trust God — but we also farm groundnuts.
💛 MEET OUR FOUNDER
Madam Happy was born with a heart for the vulnerable. As a child, she dreamed of building an orphanage. As an adult, she built something even more difficult — a special needs school in a community that did not initially understand or accept it.
She is the Proprietor of Happy Academy. She is also the head cook, the fundraiser, the social worker, the parent counselor, and, when necessary, the groundnut farmer.
When funds run low — and they often do — Madam Happy goes to the farm. She cultivates groundnuts with her own hands. She harvests, processes, and sells them to buy food for the children. Her husband, Awuni Adongo, works beside her.
They have sold personal belongings to keep the school running. They have gone without salaries so children could eat. They have held crying parents and welcomed abandoned children at midnight.
She does not ask for recognition. She asks for partners. She asks for people who will not let these children be forgotten.
“I never imagined I would be farming groundnuts to keep a school alive. But for these children, I would do anything. Every child here is my child. I will never abandon them.”
— Madam Happy Emmanuella Akunlibey
💛 MEET OUR CO-FOUNDER
Mr. Awuni Adongo is Madam Happy’s husband and the rock upon which this school stands. He has worked without complaint, supported without condition, and sacrificed without recognition. When the school needed a hand, he gave both hands. When children needed a father, he became one.
He manages the groundnut farming operation, handles maintenance, and provides security for the boarding house. He is the quiet strength behind Happy Academy.
